Immigrating to Canada & DACA

Dear fellow Dreamers,

First lets get the most pressing questions out of the way:

  1. Can I apply for Express Entry from the USA if I have DACA status? Yes, you do not need to leave the USA to apply for Express Entry.
  2. Does my DACA status affect my application to Canada or the process in a any way? No, but you will have to upload a copy of your work permit. The Canadian government will want to know that you obtained your work experience legally.
  3. Will applying for express entry affect my DACA status? No, at least for now. But if you do get accepted into Canada you will lose your DACA status once you leave the USA.

I mostly made this website for you. When I began researching this topic last November, there was zero information out there specific to our situation. Which is the reason I justified spending thousands of dollars on attorneys.

I know right know things are hard, and making the decision to immigrate to Canada is not an easy one. However, I can say that once my husband and I decided to make the move we went from feeling hopeless and defeated to feeling exited and re-energized. By deciding to move to Canada and starting the immigration process we feel that we have taken back control of our future, and the feeling is exhilarating.  If you would like to read more about our story and why we chose Canada check out  my “essay” (not sure if that is what we call them outside of school, but we’ll go with that) “A New Home“.

I hope this answered all your questions on DACA-related matters, it’s pretty straight forward. If I missed anything please leave me a comment and I will try to answer your questions as best as I can.

Cheers,

D.
